The SSR Explained: Strategic Scientific Reserve in the MCU
The Strategic Scientific Reserve, or SSR, is the government organization at the center of Agent Carter. It is also one of the building blocks of the larger MCU, because it leads toward S.H.I.E.L.D.
Where the SSR comes from
The SSR first appears in Captain America: The First Avenger, where it is a wartime unit dealing with science-driven threats. After the war, the organization continues its work in peacetime, handling cases that involve dangerous technology and secret weapons.
The New York office
In Season 1, the SSR's New York office is the main workplace. It is a busy, male-dominated space where Peggy is given clerical tasks while she quietly handles the more important work. Key figures include Chief Roger Dooley, Agent Jack Thompson, and Agent Daniel Sousa.
The Los Angeles office
In Season 2, the story moves to the SSR's Los Angeles branch. The setting is lighter and more spread out, and Sousa takes on a leadership role. The LA office also shows how the SSR operates in different cities, with local politics, film studios, and scientific labs all in play.
How the SSR works in the show
The SSR investigates technology and threats that regular law enforcement cannot handle. It also deals with internal problems: ambition, rivalry, and prejudice. Many of the series' best scenes happen in the office, where small gestures show how much Peggy has to prove.
The road to S.H.I.E.L.D.
The SSR is a precursor to S.H.I.E.L.D., the larger intelligence agency that shapes the MCU. Peggy is a founder of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the franchise, so watching her SSR years explains the values and tensions that carry forward.
