Peggy Carter's Legacy: From the Series to the Multiverse
Even after Agent Carter ended, Peggy Carter remained a major figure in the MCU. Hayley Atwell has returned to the role several times, and the character's influence stretches well beyond the series.
Before and during the series
Peggy first appears in Captain America: The First Avenger as Steve Rogers' ally and the person who believes in him early. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, viewers see the older Peggy, living with the memory of the war. The series fills in the years between.
Later appearances
Peggy shows up in several later MCU projects. In Captain America: Civil War, her funeral is a key emotional moment, and her niece Sharon Carter plays a bigger role. In Avengers: Endgame, Peggy's story reaches an emotional conclusion tied to Steve Rogers. Each appearance rewards viewers who know the series.
Captain Carter
In the animated series What If...?, Atwell voices Captain Carter, an alternate-universe version of Peggy who becomes a super-soldier hero. The character later appears in live action in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Captain Carter shows how Peggy's story can be reimagined while keeping the spirit that made her popular.
Peggy and S.H.I.E.L.D.
Peggy's work at the SSR sets the stage for the creation of S.H.I.E.L.D., one of the MCU's key organizations. Our SSR explainer describes how those pieces connect.
What the series contributed
The series showed that a period spy story with a woman at the center could be witty, stylish, and emotionally rich. It also deepened the MCU's postwar history and gave side characters such as Jarvis and Sousa room to shine. See our profiles of Jarvis and Sousa.
