Peggy Carter Character Profile: Agent, Leader, Icon
Peggy Carter is the center of the series and one of the most admired characters in the MCU. She debuted in Captain America: The First Avenger as a British officer who believed in Steve Rogers before anyone else did. In her own series, she carries the story herself.
Background
Peggy is a British intelligence officer who worked alongside Steve during the war. By the time the series begins, she has moved to the SSR in New York and is grieving a man she never got to say goodbye to. That grief stays with her throughout the show without ever turning her into a sad character.
What makes her good at the job
Peggy is a trained fighter, but her real strengths are patience and judgment. She observes, improvises, and keeps her cool when things collapse around her. She also uses the way people underestimate her as a tool. Colleagues who dismiss her as a typist often do not notice what she is doing in front of them.
The fight against being overlooked
Much of the drama comes from workplace sexism in the postwar years. The SSR is full of men who took credit for the war effort and expect women to return to quieter roles. Peggy's response is rarely a speech. She simply does the work better than they do, and the series lets that speak for itself.
Relationships that shape her
- Edwin Jarvis: a loyal, funny partner who becomes a real friend. See our Jarvis guide.
- Howard Stark: a reckless, charming friend whose trouble sets the plot in motion. See our Howard Stark profile.
- Daniel Sousa: a colleague who respects her abilities. See our Sousa profile.
- Angie Martinelli: a friend outside the spy world who keeps Peggy grounded.
Why she resonates
Peggy is competent without being cold, funny without being a joke, and determined without being reckless. Hayley Atwell gives her warmth and steel in equal measure, which is why viewers still ask for more of her story.
