Spoiler note: this article keeps major plot twists out of view. It is an unofficial fan piece, written in our own words.

Season 1 of Agent Carter is short, tightly paced, and confident in its identity. With eight episodes, it moves quickly and never loses sight of its main character. This review avoids major plot spoilers, though it discusses the premise and broad themes.

The setup

Set in New York in 1946, the season opens with Peggy stuck in a job that does not match her talents. Howard Stark's stolen inventions create a crisis, and Peggy secretly agrees to help him while pretending to be an ordinary SSR employee. The result is a double life: office work by day, covert missions at every other opportunity.

What works

  • Peggy herself. Hayley Atwell makes her formidable and human at once.
  • The Peggy and Jarvis partnership. James D'Arcy's Jarvis brings dry humor and surprising courage.
  • The period detail. Costumes, cars, diners, and apartments make 1946 feel lived in. Our fashion article looks closer at the wardrobe.
  • The supporting cast. Daniel Sousa, Jack Thompson, and Roger Dooley give the SSR office real texture.

The villains

The season builds toward a threat connected to Leviathan, and it introduces Dottie Underwood, one of the show's most memorable antagonists. You can read more about her in our Dottie profile. Some viewers feel the middle episodes lean on familiar mystery tropes, but the character work stays strong throughout.

Episodes to look for

The titles include "Now Is Not the End," "The Iron Ceiling," and "Valediction." Our Season 1 episode list has the full order.

Verdict

Season 1 is a polished, funny, emotionally grounded spy story and a great introduction to the series. Even viewers who rarely watch superhero-adjacent television tend to find something to like here. If it hooks you, continue to our Season 2 review.
